History of EGC

 

On October 18, 1895 Eureka Grand Chapter (EGC), Order of Eastern Star (OES), State of New York and its Jurisdiction was instituted in New York City by Joseph S. Curtis, Past Grand Master of Celestial Lodge #3 F & AM assisted by Edward V. Eato and other master masons.

 

Six Chapters were represented at its first Grand Session held June 1896 in NYC. They were Alpha #1 (NYC), Omega #2 (Elmira), Sheba #3 (Binghampton), Sun Light #4 (Saratoga), Rebecca #5 (Montclair) and Starlight #6 (Utica).

 

These chapters received their warrants at this Grand Session under the leadership of Worthy Grand Patron, Joseph S. Curtis and Worthy Grand Matron, Mary S. Reed.

 

In 1906, the Grand Chapter was re-warranted by Most Worshipful Grand Master (MWGM), Henry A. Spencer and Hattie Brown, the WGM . In 1910 there were 15 chapters covering New York and New Jersey. In 1914, with the assistance of EGC, the New Jersey Grand Chapter was instituted in the state of New Jersey.

 

EGC went through a period of re-construction and on September 10, 1927, a special meeting was held at Mother A.M.E. Zion Church and Eureka Grand Chapter received its charter with the words A Prince Hall Affiliation w as added from the MWGM, George E. Marshall.

 

Elected were WGP Roland R. Johnson and WGM Araminta Taylor.
